So much more than "Pre Health"

College of Sciences and Mathematics:
Pre Health and SO much more!

Did you know that the College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM) offers 33 undergraduate degrees and 3 minors?!

Here is a list of the degrees that are offered:

Pre Health Programs at AU

One of the most popular programs in COSAM is pre health. The pre health program is not a major, but rather a concentration, that prepares students for entrance into the various professional schools. Some of the most common professional schools are medical, dental, pharmacy, optometry and physical therapy. Historically, COSAM has placed students into professional schools at 30% above the national average of placement into professional schools. In addition to high rates of placement, former COSAM students have reported that they were “superbly prepared” for the academic challenges of professional school.

What can you do with a degree from COSAM?!

In addition to pre health there are MANY other majors in COSAM to prepare you for an exciting future. Some of the possible careers for students with a degree from COSAM include:

  • Forensics
  • Law
  • Public Health
  • Environmental Testing
  • Petroleum Industry
  • Pharmaceutical and Laboratory equipment sales

Here is a list of some companies where recent COSAM graduates are now employed:

  • Savannah River Staff
  • Mayo Clinic
  • FBI
  • NASA
  • Naval Research Lab
  • Vulcan Materials
  • Integrated Ocean Drilling Program

Show me the money: COSAM Scholarships
COSAM has a number of scholarships designated for current students. In order to be considered for a COSAM scholarship, you must complete the COSAM scholarship application.

To be a recipient of a COSAM scholarship, you must be pursuing a major in the College of Sciences and Mathematics. COSAM scholarships are available to both entering freshmen and currently-enrolled students. ACT/SAT scores are the primary determinant in awarding freshman scholarships while the Auburn GPA is the primary determinant in awarding scholarships to currently-enrolled students. COSAM students receiving university-wide scholarships are not precluded from receiving a COSAM scholarship.

There are many ways that COSAM is able to fund scholarships for their students, one of our biggest scholarship event is the Dean’s Scholarship Golf Classic. This event began in 1995, as a means to provide scholarships for students undertaking studies in biological, physical and mathematical sciences. The past several years, this event has raised enough money to provide full tuition scholarships for at least 5 students per year.

Tigers for Tigers
Did you know that all the tigers left in the world would not fill one section in Jordan Hare Stadium! The Tigers for Tigers program was designed to increase awareness of the severe perils facing wildlife today, using our mascot, the tiger, as an example of a species on the brink of extinction.

The Tigers for Tigers program originated at the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1999 and was brought to Auburn by the Society for Conservation Biology, which is a student organization in the department of Biological Sciences. For upcoming events or more information, visit the Web site at www.auburn.edu/scb/tigersfortigers .

Undergraduate Research Opportunities:
A unique aspect of being a COSAM student is the opportunities in research that await you. COSAM offers an Undergraduate Research Fellowship. This program gives undergraduate students the opportunity to be involved with cutting edge research. Last year, six COSAM students were each awarded $4,400 for a year long fellowship to work 20 hours a week on a research project with a COSAM faculty member. Interested COSAM students can apply with a faculty member to receive these awards. Awardees are chosen based upon academic strength, the quality of the projects and how the research experience may help mold their future careers. The fellowships also come with $1,400 in supply funds to help conduct the research, and the opportunity to present the research at an annual conference in the respected area.

Job Market for Class of 2009

According to a report put out by NACE (National Association of Colleges and Employers), hiring for the Class of 2009 reveals very little growth but no real expected decline. The respondents to an August survey revealed that 52 percent project to hire fewer 2009 graduates than they did from the Class of 2008. However, 34 percent expect to hire more and 14 percent expect to hire the same amount.

The same survey revealed that the only industries not expecting to decrease hiring were manufacturing, professional services and government. The government actually expects hiring to go up 19.8 percent. Distribution and utilities as well as agriculture industries reported the highest decrease in hiring.

So, perhaps the sky isn’t falling as so many seem to be espousing, but it may be time for 2009 graduates to create a strong resume, write a powerful cover letter, learn how to network really well and have excellent interview skills.

Career Development Services is aware of the potential job search challenges for this year’s class and looks forward to equipping Auburn graduates with strong job search skills. Want job security? Try Nursing!

Did you know that by the year 2020, there will be an estimated shortage of 800,000 nurses?

The Health Care field is one of the best places to get a job and will likely stay that way for years to come. With a degree in nursing you can shape your career as you go. Just choose from one of over 100,000 positions!

A nursing degree allows you to choose the area of practice that offers a schedule that fits your lifestyle. Sign-on bonuses of up to $14,000 are being offered, and some hospitals are advertising significant salary increases for key specialties, such as intensive care. The many areas where a nurse might practice vary greatly: schools, clinics, offices, and even military services. And finally, the nursing profession offers a wide variety of specialties. Lying and Resumes

First of all, I don't really understand why people lie on their resumes in the first place. Are they so brave and bold that they think they won't get caught? Or are they so self conscious and lacking in confidence in their real life experiences that they must hide behind lies? Either way, it's sad, it's wrong and it definitely doesn't make the job search go more smoothly!

A community college instructor served on a search committee for an English instructor. One of the candidates had been teaching as an adjunct and was pretty much a shoe-in for the available position. However, in reviewing his resume, someone noted a presentation the candidate claimed to have given at a professional conference that the committee member had attended...and had no recollection of even seeing the candidate there. (Did anyone else just say, "Duh"?) When confronted with this resume fabrication, the candidate argued that he had submitted the proposal, the proposal was accepted, but that he was not able to attend due to financial reasons. In his head, he really didn't think he was lying.

So, here is another reason people lie on their resumes...their ethics are operating in shades of gray. My recommendation, be above reproach! For example, you may view yourself as someone's administrative assistant, but if you really are just a work study student, you need to list your true title unless otherwise established with your supervisor.

Basically, there are much better ways to make your skills and experiences stand out through your resume without embellishing or outright lying on your resume. Check out this CareerBuilder article for statistics regarding how often liars get caught...and subsequently not hired. The guy at the community college, the shoe-in, the known entity...dude didn't get the job.
